News: Cedar Point prepares to set sail

Posted at 5:38 PM EDT (2138 GMT)

Oct. 28th, 2004 -- This Sunday, Cedar Point's Radisson Harbour Inn will close. It will reopen Friday, Nov. 5, as the all-new tropical-themed Castaway Bay after a $22 million expansion and renovation project.

The centerpiece of Castaway Bay is the giant indoor waterpark, a five-story, 38,000 square-foot complex overflowing with all kinds of aquatic activities. However, day visitors to Cedar Point are out of luck, as the waterpark will only be open to overnight guests of the resort.

Unlike Cedar Point itself, the hotel will be open all year. It covers 230,000 square feet and features 237 rooms and suites. In addition to the waterpark, the hotel also has many of the other standard amenities, including an exercise room, shops, and restaurants.

Check back within the next week as we will be covering its grand reopening.

A indoor waterpark. Awsome. Looks like CP will be making money in the off-season to now.

How will this affect Gret Bear Lodge or whatever that place is down the road? It was pretty expensive. almost $200 a night. You had to buy a room to use the water park. I think. I don't know too much about water parks. Someone inform me!!

/ It think business will be steady, but a little less. I just hope they don't go out of business.

I can't believe it's opening soon. It seems like yesterday when they announced it. Yah CP!

5150, Castaway Bay will be the same as great Bear in that you have to be a guest at the hotel to visit Castaway Bay. It's only for the guests and the rooms are fairly similar in price I'd guess. I got a brochure for it in the mail. Prices ranged from $200 (est) to $400 or so, depending on how many people accomodated and the type of room.

I think this is a good idea for Cedar Fair/Cedar Point. It helps to bring in revenue during the offseason. I don't know if it will be popular to those outside of Ohio. I can't see making a relatively long trip when there are indoor waterparks elsewhere as well. I'll make a trip to CP in a second to ride their coasters, not neccessarily to ride waterslides. But with only 237 rooms, I'm sure they won't have much trouble filling it up most times.
