News: Shivering Timbers No. 1 in Internet poll

Posted at 8:43 PM EST (0143 GMT)

Dec. 6th, 2004 -- The Internet Wooden Tracked Roller Coaster Poll released the results of its 11th annual poll.

Shivering Timbers, the 122-foot-tall wooden coaster at Michigan's Adventure in Muskegon, Mich., claimed top honors.

Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce, Conn., took second place, while Phoenix at Knoebels, Pa., took third.

The poll is considered by many coaster enthusiasts to be the most accurate of the polls available. Enthusiasts download or save a list of coasters and rate their favorites, from first to last, and what they like to get out of coasters.

The results are tabulated with an algorithm by ranking their winning percentage.

For the list of all 176 wooden coasters, visit the 2004 Wood Coaster Poll Results.

A steel-tracked poll is currently being conducted. Ballot-casting ends Dec. 15. See the list and information here.

I love this poll. It's easily the most accurate poll among polls. It uses a good system and doesn't discriminate. I like it.

Now I've just got to ride more of these woodies!

Wow, surpringing comback.

I'm surprised Thunderhead was #5 so fast. That's great!

How can an opinion poll be accurate?

Becuase it accurately tells us what the most popular coaster is.

Well that may be true, but it doesn't tell us which coasters are accurately better than others.

Nor does it claim to be able. There really is no way to determine which coaster is better than another because everybody has likes and dislikes. This is a poll that determines what the most popular coasters are. And to find that out, you have to go by opinions, there isn't any other way.

Another thing that impresses me is that #20 is Avalanche at Timber Falls Adventure Golf in WI. Everyone seems to really like it, and as more people ride it, it could go higher.

Nice to see Viper at SFGAm did well, coming in at #27. Although American Eagle didn't fare very good, placing #135. American Eagle is a classic, kinda sad that people don't appreciate it more. I think it should at least crack the top #100.

Some Six Flags woodies still did fairly well and some scored too low including the racers. If one looks at the number of votes for the top ranking coasters, one would see that there are less votes than many of the coasters that scored lower. Not to say that if more people went on the top ranking coasters, they would score lower. It just seems that the coasters at the most-visited parks have more people voting than many of the high-scored coasters.

Although I find this poll helpfull to determine which parks to visit, I don't like the thought of 10 or 20 people making a coaster #11 or #13, and 178 people making a coaster #135.

271 enthusiasts have ridden and voted on Mean Streak and 151 have been on Rolling Thunder. I guess there IS a bias in the coaster community that doesn't reflect what is really going on in the real world (i.e. population and attendance.)

I can't believe that the Beast only made #47. I would think it would at least be in the top 15.
