News: Scottish park feeling tsunami ripples

Posted at 5:35 PM EST (2235 GMT)

Jan. 4th, 2005 -- More then a week after a series of deadly tsunamis struck Southeast Asia, a theme park in Scotland has come under fire for advertising a ride named Tsunami.

Tsunami is a small Pinfari-built inverted roller coaster with two inversions that opened at the park last year. Ads have been placed on local buses to spread the word about the ride. Some residents, however, feel the ads are insensitive to a disaster that has killed around 150,000 people.

Park officials suggest that people focus on helping those affected by the tsunamis then worrying about the ride's name. The park has said that Tsunami's name will not change.

Oh man, people are too sensitive nowadays. The ride has been called Tsunami since it opened. They didn't predict a catastrophe.

And advertising doesn't just happen overnight. They most likely had the ads on buses long before the tsunamis.

The director of the park said it has other rides named after disasters. Why aren't people mad because tornados kill people?

This is crazy. People just want to be outraged at something.

Advertising can happen in a week-just depends on how efficent the agency is--but it is unlikely the park did this intentionally.

It is probably because of the location. although Scotland was not hit directly, many peole from there died in the tsunamis. they were visiting and i think about 13,000 died from Scotland. that number may be from Sweeden and way off but i think it is in the ball park. they are making a big deal about it but i kind of understand. people here wont make a big deal about Tsunami at Clementon because we were not hit as hard. it hits home more over there.

Heck, Cypress Gardens called their one coaster "triple hurricane" because of the three hurricanes that struck Florida this past year, and no one seems to complain.

It's not like the park is taking advantage of the situation or even named it after the fact, they named it well before the disaster and couldn't have possibly predicted this. Stop whining....this is why the British Isles lost the Revolutionary War.

Well, that's the difference in Europe and the US, I guess. I thought we were bad for complaining.

The name Tsunami has been on the new coaster at Clementon Park, NJ long before the diaster happened. It will remind me of the terrible thing that had happened, but the name was there first and is still a good name.

Don't these people have anything better in their lives to complain about?

It's rather silly that people are making a big deal of this. If the ride already had that name which I'm pretty sure it did, then I don't see why they're so outraged over it. They're are rides with tornado, hurricane, etc in the names of rides, nobody seems to be making a huge deal of this. Next we know, they'll have to pull movies off the shelves of video stores or the film out of a movie theater if it has to do with natural disasters. Better go rent The Day After Tomorrow and Twister while you still can. Never know when someone is going to complain about those next.

Someone deserves 30 lashings with a wet noodle, and it's not the park.

Hey if it sells, why not use it. Sure it had that name first, but go with it. It's on the mind of everyone, strike while it's hot.

A bunch of coasters are named for disasters, and nasty animals, and bad situations. It draws. I hope Mt. St. Helens doesn't blow its top or PKD might have to do some renaming.

Why are folks so onion skinned?

HEY! Are the parks in Scotland even open?? It's pretty nasty over there this time of year.
