News: Strike at Six Flags New England

Posted at 5:38 PM EST (2238 GMT)

Feb. 4th, 2005 -- Yesterday at noon, 12 workers at Six Flags New England went on strike outside of the amusement park. The employees are mechanics and communication workers.

The strikers have a litany of complaints against the park. One of the mechanics, Robert Farris, complained that SNFE has shifted their hours around without asking, decreased the amount of time they get off, and has forced them to use their personal vehicles to do their jobs. The employees are also seeking join a union; currently no SFNE workers belong to unions.

Six Flags announced it was surprised at the move, but declined to comment further.

Jeez, all those complaints sound like things SF would do. And why would SF be surprised? And if those people are really angry, and their already on minumum wage, I say go work somewhere else if you're really complaining.

Doesn't say much for the safety of the park if they have broken tools--no wonder rides are always closed

The spokeswoman said that the tool issue never came up in any meetings or anything, how are things supposted to be fixed when nobody knows they are broken? They also aren't paid anywhere near to minimum wage.

I don't think it's right that they have to use their own trucks to do their job though.

The fact that they want to join a union is absolutely ridiculous, but if they are telling the truth about these things I feel sorry for them.

I don't know about the situation with the hours and what side to stand on that issue but I find it really amusing that the park has them using their own vehicles for work. I can understand the workers being upset on that issue.

"SNFE has increased the work day by two hours without asking"

"Increased the work day by two hours without asking?"

Read the source article again... it doesn't look they added 2 hours, but rather shifted their hours later.

(Or am I missing something?)

FIRE those workers. If they don't want to work, there are others who do.

There's a good article at http://www.pvaflcio.org/node/659 that provides some more details about what the workers are facing.
