News: Driver who killed 6 in crash sentenced

Posted at 10:50 PM EST (0350 GMT)

Mar. 5th, 2005 -- Brian J. Woody, 29, of Toledo, Ohio, was sentenced to 19 years in prison for causing an accident that killed six people in June.

Woody was charged with six counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and one count of aggravated vehicular assault, third-and fourth-degree felonies, respectively.

Woody caused a chain reaction in which six people were killed after leaving the Cedar Point amusement Park. His vehicle crossed the center lane and impacted the front left corner of a tractor-trailer, the Ohio Highway Patrol said. Witnesses said the tractor-trailer then clipped another vehicle and smashed head-on into the vehicle with the victims.

The impact pushed their vehicle off a bridge, and  it landed upside down in a creek.

Tests showed that Woody had alcohol, marijuana and Valium in his system, though his blood-alcohol level was below the legal limit of 0.08.

Before he was sentenced, Woody told the court he was sorry.

When this first happened I felt this guy should go away forever. I read this in the newspaper this morning. To me it's disgusting. 19 years for 6 lives (4 of them young children), no, that just doesn't seem right to me.

First, beer and Valium, absolutely idiotic and marijuana on top of that!?? Second, I honestly feel if you have to be on Valium, you should not be at an amusement park and he said he had the beer and medication while at the park. Then to smoke grass along with the beer and Valium and drive a car?? I'm sorry, 19 years is like a slap on the hand!

This is the kind of thing that makes me sad and pissed off at the same time. There wasn't a lot of coverage or talk in the Sandusky area about it after it happened other than basic details (unless I didn't pay attention...). 19 years IS a slap on the wrist for the death of six people... it's just horrid to see this kind of thing happen, especially when everyone is just expecting to have fun and this ends up happening...

Stinks...if it was just some old ordinary accident, then obviously. But they were coming back from a dayy of fun to have this happen.

Must be a slow news day for TN. This may have just squeaked by because it mentioned Cedar Point, but come on. ...and it was just an ordinary accident, there are intoxicated driver crash stories on the local and national news every night.

But at least TN gave us something. Some websites sit idle for days when they don't have something to say.

He's "sorry", what a joke that is. They're always sorry afterwards, especially when it comes time to their sentencing. But unfortunately since the deaths aren't premeditated or intentional, they will never do an extremely long time in jail like a life sentence or worse.
