Holy crap, why would anyone pay that much just to ride a coaster? So what if it's the tallest and fastest, I'd gladly wait in line and know I still have $500.

Kind of old news but at least you got it up. Some of them are above $800 now.

Is auctioning off first rides for charity a new trend now? Silver Bullet did it, and now this is too. i can see Hydra and SheiKra doing this also.

Auctioning off first rides has been around for a while. I remember the first I heard of it was at Knoebels. Worthwhile though. It's for charity and they know we coaster fans will pay. or I guess some of us. I don't think $500 is to much to be the first riders on a coaster that will probably be around for 20+ years. I don't think it is about height and speed. I think it's just about bein' the first. You'll always have that story. I was on the first rehearsal ride of Thunder at Hershey Park and I always can say that.

Many people might think it's silly to pay that kind of amount but it is something to do and makes for a great story to tell. Plus, since it goes to charity, people who have the money don't mind spending it and in fact probably feel good about it. I can tell you that if I had a high paying job, lets say $100,000+ a year, I'd pay hundreds or even a few thousand possibly to ride too.

Bidding ends on my birthday. Aweeee.
Too bad I'll be riding coasters on that day. lol
There are people out there that have money to burn that will bid on this.
I'm not one of those people.

Sounds insane to pay that much just to ride it. I will be riding it this summer for free anyway.
Who had the idea to start bidding at $456 though? It is a weird number to start bidding at...why not just do 455 or 460?
Anyway, if I had the money to just throw around like that I most likely would...or just rent the park out for the day and ride all the rides with whoever I let in...Hehe!
(This is assuming that if I had $456 to throw around I would be a millionaire and could afford to shut the park down for a day just so I could ride a few rides.)

456 isn't just any number in this case -- it represents the height (in feet) of this tower.
Anyway, it all comes down to this question: Is hundreds of dollars worth potentially saving hours of time wait for your first ride on this? The answers may vary.

For all the ones saying they'd pay so you can have a story and tell people "I was the first on a rollercoaster":
Do you really think other people besides enthusaists are going to care? I'm pretty sure if you met someone and as an intresting story you tell them "I was the first to ride the world's tallest and fastest coaster back in 2005" they wouldn't care. They'd probably think you were crazy for spending all that money just to tell them a story.

Oh, yeah duh. I just realized that. I had forgotten the hieght of it and wasn't making the connection between the two. Cool. That is a cool way to start off bidding. I can't believe I didn't get that...The ride is 456ft and they are starting bidding off at $456...I'm an idiot.

WildFyre I agree with you.
The GP already thinks I'm crazy to actually drive to different cities to ride coasters.
They'd really think I'm crazy for paying $800 for one ride on one of them.

It might be a lot of money and it might not worth it to you and yeah, maybe others won't care besides some enthusiasts. But the money does go to a charity and I'd hope none of you would say that money going to charity is a waste. So, you have people giving to charity and they also get something in return for it. There are people who spend hundreds of dollars on things they don't really need, what's wrong with this?

Talking about crazy park lovers, one of my friends just baught an old lift cabin from my home park (La Ronde) because they were dismantling it. It costed more for the truck tu transport it lol. and that same park is in the bidding trend this year for their new rides, but instead of a big coaster, it's all about kiddie flat rides. Well, it still goes for charity, so I think It's a great idea.
