News: First rides on maXair to be auctioned

Posted at 2:07 AM EDT (0607 GMT)

Apr. 15th, 2005 -- In a continuing trend among amusement parks, Cedar Point is auctioning off seats on the first ride of it's latest attraction, maXair. The proceeds from the bidding will go to the Red Cross.

The bidding for the 50 seats on maXair's first ride begins at $75. In addition to being on the first ride, the winning bidders will also receive free entrance to the park, breakfast and a commemorative medallion. The event will take place on May 7. The bids are being taken through e-mail, telephone and fax. Bidding ends May 4.

See NewsNet 5 for more information. Visit the Red Cross to bid via the Internet.

Cedar Point seems to do this with every big ride they put in nowadays. I wonder if this will pull anywhere near as many people as the roller coasters do. It's not record-setting or even a unique ride.

Yeah... I dont see this getting the money as coasters like WT and TTD did. I still think people will bid on them to get money for the Red Cross

I think the $75 is a great deal for all you get:

Free entrance to the park...$45
Breakfast..........................$10
Commemorative medallion.$20
Total.................................$70

Well what do you know? Plus the actual first ride on MaXair. What a deal. :-p

I'm not surprised they did this. I think we can expect it with most new rides. I see a bid coming for Hydra and Sheikra as well. It is a good deal though.

If I lived in Sandusky or nearby, I would certainly put a low end bid on this since I would see the bids going that high. I'd probably be willing to go up to $100.

Something else would be cool when building a new ride and having an auction would be if thet had a special day for it before the park officially opens and they auctioned off not just the ride but a few hours just to those and a few others they could invite for exclusive time at the park.

Auction off a few hundred spots with a starting price of a hundred or two. See how that goes. That would be pretty nice, to get to ride the new ride before most everyone else and then also have ERT with just a few hundred others on all the other rides.

But aren't the real first rides going to those attending Media Day the day before?

Well...they still get to be the first riders among the general public. That is one thing that bugged me about when they did this with TTD. The media and a lot of them would ride before the people who auctioned for a ride. I think it would only be fair to have them ride the day before the media. But oh well.
