News: Wildwater Kingdom opening delayed

Posted at 1:42 AM EDT (0542 GMT)

Apr. 22nd, 2005 -- Those waiting for Geauga Lake's new waterpark, Wildwater Kingdom, will have to wait longer. The waterpark, scheduled initially for a May 28 opening, has been pushed back to an undisclosed date sometime in the middle of June.

Geauga Lake attributed the delay to record-breaking snowfall over the winter. In light of the postponement, the park will offer early season discount tickets for $19.95 until Wildwater Kingdom opens.

Geauga Lake's existing waterpark, Hurricane Hannah’s Waterpark, is still on schedule to open May 28. The park itself begins seasonal operation on May 7.

That's nice of them to even lower the price further until the waterpark is set to open. It was especially nice since it wasn't really their fault and a result of a harsh winter. I don't think anybody can say that Cedar Fair isn't trying to do the best they can in the customer service department.

Also, it's not a big deal since many times it doesn't get warm on a regular basis until June anyway usually. May can still sometimes be relatively cold for a waterpark.

Opps...that's what happens when you think it's so easy to tear down an animal park and a bunch of nice looking buildings to put up a waterpark.

^ Who ever said that it would be easy??

CF acknowledged that they couldn't meet their planned opening due to causes beyond their control and has announced the delay well in advance. I applaud them for saying something this early so that the general public has plenty of warning. Plus as coasterlove said, the fact that they'll drop the ticket prices in the interim is awesome.

That is great. I applaud them for adding a water park. It seems to be what the guests wanted. I am more likely to ride the water rides that look at the nice landscaping that was in Sea World.

It's just fun to laugh at the double standard which CF fanboys set for their parks over their attitude with the opening of a new coaster at another chain (which had its share of problems at Cedar Point.) If the weather can be bad over Ohio, it can also be bad two states away in New Jersey. http://www.thrillnetwork.com/stories_view.php/975 />
Cedar Fair now blaming the weather? What is this world coming to???

Well, it was actually some bad weather for real and not just an excuse used almost every year. ;)

I wasn't trying to make any direct comparison between GL and SFGAd with their delay of Kingda Ka. Although, I think it was a shame that announcement of thee delay of KK came in such short notice.

Last, as I said before. Who really wants to go and use the waterpark if it isn't neccessarily that warm out? Even if they want to, there is still the water park rides that were already there until everything else is ready.

Thunder dan. What is the sense of opening a marine animal park in a place that is not year round? The waterpark will rule.

Thunder Dan, if you actually lived in North East Ohio, then you would know that Geauga Lake, you would know that we got hit with a few feet of snow this winter. And they had to stop construction.

ThunderDan, if you've actually worked with concrete before you know that it can't set in wet areas...Kingda Ka started pouring footers way before WWK construction even started, and this winter was really bad. Geauga Lake made a bad decision to start construction on the park, but it's not their fault that you can't really pour concrete when there is inches of snow on the ground. I do applaud the park though for taking advantage of the weather problems and getting other things finished up though.

Like coasterlove said anyway, out here it doesn't really warm up till June, and it'd be dumb anyways to open a water park in May when people probably won't go.

ALL, I understand all of this. I'm ribbing the fanbois. I enjoy seing how standards are set for one park chain while degrading a park of another chain is widely accepted. I also enjoy all of the free PR they get.

SFWOA was my favorite thrill park. The rides are awesome, the park is clean, all but two of the rides were open, and I wish them well. I will also be making a trip out there again this summer.

I haven't seen a fanboy comment yet...

And about the weather, I work 15 minutes from GL. This was (and with this weekend's forecast, is) the winter from hell. I don't complain much about the weather, but CF is in no way blaming the weather as one may think.

You have to look at the Kingda Ka news to see a few of them. I guess it's the same old hash and acceptable to come to the defense of a Cedar Fair park and save the snide comments for the Six Flags parks.
